The honest picture

Why Scottish homeowners are stuck right now.

Your bill keeps climbing.

Ofgem cap up again. You're paying standing charges (around £17 a month for electricity under the current cap) before a single kettle boils. The only bit you can actually control is how much electricity you buy from the grid.

Every solar company phones the same way.

Pushy calls. One-day-only packages. No one actually looking at your roof before quoting.

You've heard the horror stories.

Bad installs. Leaks. Installers going bust before the warranty kicks in. Paying for solar twice is the one thing worse than paying for it once.

A different way to buy solar

A solar quote without the hard sell or the off-the-shelf package.

We install solar the same way we'd want it installed on our own roof. Bespoke design. Our own engineers. Quality kit we've vetted and will stand behind when the rain starts in year 8.

Proof, not promises

Why Lothians homeowners trust Gensource.

"The whole experience has been excellent. From the initial survey and recommendations done by Gav, to the communication with Robert and the installation by the in-house team — it was all brilliant."

Neil Scott · Google · Nov 2025

"Friendly bunch with no interest in pushing for a sale, rather they looked for a solution for us. Everyone we dealt with was fantastic, friendly and keen to help us reduce our reliance on the grid."

John Moisey · Google · Nov 2025

"The electricians went above and beyond. Work was clean and tidy. The in-house support from the Gensource team was very helpful. Delighted to recommend to any potential customers."

Case study · Oct 2025 · Scotland

9.9 kWp of solar and a Tesla Powerwall, redesigned on site when a late skylight changed the roof.

A new skylight appeared right before install. Our team redrew the panel layout on the day, kept shading and structural loads right, and still commissioned on schedule.

Straight answers

The questions Scottish homeowners actually ask us.

Will it actually pay back in Scottish weather?
We can't promise numbers on a web page, and we won't try. What we can do: model your specific roof using PVGIS (the EU's solar radiation dataset, free and open) and show you the savings range under different electricity price scenarios, with the assumptions written plainly alongside every figure. You'll see what we tested, what we assumed, and where the numbers get sensitive, so you can judge for yourself whether it's worth it. No guaranteed savings, no marketing maths.
What happens if something goes wrong after install?
Two-year workmanship warranty from us. 15-25 year product warranties from the manufacturer. Remote monitoring on every system as standard. When you call our aftercare number, you get one of our own engineers, not a contractor we pay to show up.
Is solar right for my roof?
Maybe, maybe not. If it isn't, we'll tell you straight. No pressure, no pushy calls. Our designs are reviewed by our technical team, who sit on national MCS standards working groups. We've installed on Lothians bungalows, tenements, Highland farmhouses, and new-builds.
Why is Gensource sometimes not the cheapest quote?

Solar is a 25-year decision. The right question isn't "what's the sticker price" but "what will this cost me over the life of the system, and who'll still be there when something needs attention in year 8?" That's where we win, and where we're happy to be compared.

  • Lifetime cost, not install cost. A solar system is only as good as the parts still working in year 10. Cheaper quotes often use panel and inverter brands you've never heard of. If the manufacturer disappears, the warranty disappears with them. We stick to brands with long manufacturing track records so your warranty is still worth something when you actually need it.
  • One team, beginning to end. The people designing your system are the people installing it. No subcontractors. No "sorry, that was the installer, not us".
  • Aftercare you can actually reach. Remote monitoring on every install. When you call, you get one of our own engineers. Every competitor sells "support". We employ the people who answer.
  • Bespoke design, not a package. Your system is modelled for your roof, not pulled from a price list. Sometimes that makes us cheaper (because a package would over-sell you). Sometimes it makes us dearer (because your roof needs a different inverter). Either way, you get the right answer, not the fastest one.

If another quote is genuinely like-for-like (same panel quality, same in-house install team, same length of workmanship warranty, same aftercare), we'll tell you straight.

What equipment do you use?
Panels: JA Solar, AIKO, Sunpower. These are what the industry calls "Tier-1" — shorthand for "the manufacturer is financially stable enough that your warranty is still worth something in 15 years". Our inverters and batteries meet the same bar, matched to your system design. We have a strict product approval process and won't quote anything we don't want on our own roof.
How long does the install take?
Typical 6-10 kW residential system = 1-2 days on-site. Scaffolding up, panels on, commissioning done. We coordinate the whole thing.
